Low-Maintenence, Resilient Genetics
We cull ruthlessly to ensure our herd is as low-maintenance as possible. Our criteria for breeding stock is:
- Parasite resistant - we don't worm breeding stock. Those with natural resistance thrive. Others are culled.
- Moms that birth twins or triplets, without assistance, every year (excluding first year, which singles are permitted)
- Require no hoof trimming
- Are productive until at least 4 years of age (yielding approx. 8 lambs)
- No shearing - breeds are "hair" sheep, meaning they shed their hair rather than producing wool that needs sheared.
Thrives on 100% Grass
We never supplement anything besides minerals. No grain, ever.
Offspring fatten easily on grass only in 6 months to yield approx. 50 lb of meat.
Our lambs thrive on both rich and poor pasture, even in the winter. They prefer tough, bramble-y weeds that cows won't touch.
We use regenerative agriculture practices which include rotating our flock to a fresh paddock of pasture multiple times per week. This is critical for their health.
About the breed
Parental breeds are:
Ewes are katadin (parasite resistance) and royal white cross. Ram is dorper (yields heavy carcassed lambs).
As a result, lambs are a cross of katadin, royal white, and dorper.
